Little Love

Every photographer has their niche, an industry that they lean toward and eventually specialize in. For some the reminder of their own wedding day motivates them to re-live the electric nostalgia through other brides, while those who enjoy the structure of studio shooting with its predictable lighting and props flourish when new faces appear for their family portraits.

I've noticed that while I love taking unposed, natural photographs my client base and possibly favourite subject matter are 18 - 24 month old toddlers with their carefree and unplanned moods, expressions and characters. Don't get me wrong, I love capturing people at their most natural and unexpected best, in a crowd of corporate employees enjoying a sing along at a teambuilding event. I appreciate the moments when I can shoot fundraising events and donate my time to causes such as CANSA as I did 2 weeks ago. I thrive on the photojournalistic opportunities of 40th birthday parties and traditional weddings.

There is, however, one thing that cannot be substituted or faked and that is the genuine appreciation parents have for their childrens photographs and the joy it brings them to see their little families at their best, captured forever in time. Its the moments such as their children's laugh captured alongside butterflies and soapy bubbles, or when a little girl shows her parents her newly discovered belly button. :D

Moving onto 2011 I look forward to not only developing my skills overall but meeting a whole new set of growing families and sharing their intimate moments together. For now I've found my niche, although it doesn't define my talents nor is it set in stone. It is the one thing that makes me just as happy and fulfilled taking part in as it makes the family seeing the final results. There will be corporate functions, farewells, launches and product shoots. There will be baby showers and personal profiles but the greatest of all these things, is LOVE.

As the ball starts rolling

If you had asked me in the beginning of October if I would have my own business by November I probably would have laughed out loud, in fact I thought anything but that.

Yes I've had the intention of going on my own (eventually) and we all know that what you focus on expands as you're supported by God and those around you. My lesson - faith and focus!

My website will be launched this evening and has been made possible by the endless nagging and occasional prodding by my friend Colin, who has opened my eyes to the benefits and necessity of having your own online portfolio. I welcome all your input, criticisms and feedback!

As Cape Town calls in December for a work assignment, my pamphlets that Craig designed are being printed in time for next weeks collection and distribution. This is no rocket science approach or pioneer strategy for marketing but if you take action you WILL be supported. In my attempt at proactivity this week I landed up in the office of a recruitment agent for temp work as I fill up my photography calendar. She basically told me that my endeavour to go out on my own into a "feast or famine" industry would mean that "creative people" who, "cannot save money" such as myself, should be prepared to "Do whatever work" she gives me, "..even if its R30 an hour".

When I got back to my car both completely deflated and pessimistic, I slumped behind my steering wheel digesting this information. "Everyone wants me to fail", I heard myself say, "Everyone thinks I'm not good enough to succeed". And as I talked myself into a state of mild depression I questioned my thoughts - Who is "everyone"? Has anyone told you you're doomed to fail? No. Have you ever received feedback that indicates you're a loser? No. There is NO "everyone", its a perception that exists in our preconditioned minds. There are no limits, there are no rules, there is just faith in yourself and as Rosslyn Carter said, "You have to have confidence in your ability and then be tough enough to follow through".

Your value and self worth should never be measured by someone elses standards or lack thereof. I have decided that I'm worth more than R30 an hour, that I'm more than capable of making people smile at their memories I've saved onto disc. There is no hourly rate high enough to keep me in an office or to compare to my LOVE of photography and what it represents in my life.

School Fees

So there are times when things don't go according to plan, or perhaps you have to learn the hard way, some call it "school fees'.

Last week I learned the difference between standing my ground as a professional versus buckling under pressure, followed by "sometimes it isn't about you" versus "its all my fault".

While my diary fills up with random photographic requests such as music video documentary type photography to family outings at the park, I'm realising a lot about what this whole "self employment" thing is about. Ironically the one thing I've feared the most (being unable to pay bills due to lack of work) isn't an issue anymore, I have been filled with a serenity while I trust in the beauty of abundance.

My friend Colin Griffiths helped me register my website domain on the weekend and www.tophoto.co.za will be launched by Mid November latest. This is very exciting for me and I owe him a great deal of thanks for motivating me while I've been lax and made excuses for not having a site. I thought tophoto would be a lot easier than tanithoramphotography.co.za - what do you think??

My pamphlets are also being designed by my ever amazing graphic designer boyfriend and love of my life : Craig Herzberg - whose also been hectic with his freelance work. Natasha Alexander and myself are going to be distributing our dual full colour pamphlets from next week - so shout if you would like a couple for your store / showroom / guesthouse.

Much love!

New Beginnings

Hi friends,

I've been MIA for a couple of months, sorry about that...I'm not as dedicated as some of my fellow bloggers.

If you haven't already heard I'm going solo, a daunting and apparently "brave" thing to do.
Sometimes though, like myself, there is no time to be brave, you just gotta do it.

I must thank all my wonderful friends and fans for their outstanding support and encouragement. It means so very much. In the last couple months heading up to this point I've managed to shoot Multichoices Amazing Race Teambuilding events run by Jonny Lechtman of Max Group - he organised the event from start to finish and a great time was had by all - if you need a corporate events co-ordinator with experience and flair he's your go to guy.

On the wedding front I've shot a gorgeous wedding with Kat Forsyth, who probably thinks I'm both nuts and mentally unstable. Kat has been such a wonderful friend and we've had fun sharing with each other.....best wishes with Shauna's wedding this weekend - drive safe!

Natasha Alexander is another lady I'd like to mention, who referred me to my 2nd wedding client with whom I shot her pics at the Westcliff last month. Natasha is owner of The Flower Station specialising in flowers for all occassions. Thanks for your support my friend.

Finally, Kirstin Rowe of Cheeky Chicks and I went down to Richards Bay where I took photographs for her event. Kirstin does ladies parties, lingerie and adult toys. It was such a blast and the ladies received Kirstin and her lap dancing lesson really well. Thanks again for the laughs!

I'm getting a lot of couple shoot requests for December - if you're not going away and need me on New Years or Christmas Day I have 1 hour slots available....inbox me : tanith@starmail.co.za for further details.

Much love to you!

See you through the lens.

Living your dreams

Wow, talk about busy!
In the last week and a bit I've managed to do 4 shoots.....and I've got about 4 more lined up between now and the end of the month, including more baby birthday parties, an exciting launch of ECLIPZ hair and beauty red carpet event in Northcliff and another engagement shoot.

I really didn't imagine that someone as little as I am could manage to be this busy....what is it that makes me a success?

Well I thank all of you for taking the time to comment, if you're reading this now you're probably one of the genuine people that care, thank you - you are invaluable to me! :)

News Update

Hi friends,

I know its been a while since I've blogged and you're all asking where I've been and whats going on with the new job.

Well all is going well, I've been seriously amazed at how many strangers have joined my group and have even taken the time to contact me re: my group, I feel so blessed.

I'm running a sliding scale on my photographs. R350 for 1 hour, includes pics to DVD. R550 for 2 hour shoot (indoor shoots) and R950 for a 3 hour shoot (couples, engagement pics, outdoor stuff) all other shoots are subject to quotation.

* Anniversaries, baby shoots, maternity shoots, just for fun pics, engagements & more*

Your support is amazing, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Take a leap of faith!

If you look back at your life a year ago, where were you?
Have you manifested your dreams and potentials? Have you saved that money you've been promising or bought yourself that new queen size sleigh bed you saw at last years Decorex Show?

I realised lastnight that it all starts with a leap of faith, even when you don't have a clue where to start, begin with the end in mind! We may not know what we want to do forever, but in knowing what you don't want, you'll find what you do!

I'm so blessed that I'm as driven as I am to not land up poor, unsuccessful or dependant on others to the point that I'd rather die trying than just accept mediocrity.
What have you done today to challenge your comfort zones? Have you been promising yourself that you'll get to that holiday getaway but haven't even investigated prices? If you keep doing what you're doing, I guarantee you'll keep getting what you're getting.

People that I speak to about their goals and dreams have this sense of procrastination and excuses that comes from a poverty mentally. "I don't have money", "I don't have time", "I don't know how" - my answer - begin at the beginning - start somewhere, even if its investigating the options. My big brother Robin once advised me, "Explore every opportunity" he doesn't even realise how those words have pushed me to where I am today. Get a quote, do some research, take action!

It begins with a leap of faith, even when the world tells you it can't be done, do it anyway and you'll be surprised by the results. My latest engagement shoot proved just that. I have been supported by Universal Light and Love as I persue my hearts desires. Last year I didn't even own a camera or know what I want to do with my life, today I'm receiving praises from total strangers emailing me with words of encouragement and congratulations - my passion is being recognised - recognise your passion today without limiting beliefs and take action on your dreams because tomorrow may be too late for those who are waiting for you to shine today!

Kylie makes me smile :D

When I met Kylie I can't particularly say that sparks flew or that there was this awe inspiring sound of Angels as the heavens opened around her casting light above her head. In fact it took about a year before Kylie and I starting involving each other in our lives.

Lastnight I met with her for a much needed chat (and glass of vino) to catch up on our lives.
If theres one thing about Kylie its that shes a) dead honest b) has contageous laughter c) knows how to be supportive and a good friend.

I guess the reason she's inspired me so much is because she just isn't afraid to make new contacts and she's got the guts to go that extra mile by means of giving advice or providing you with a solution. Kylie owns her own payroll company (for those needing Divine Intervention by means of Payroll assistance) and is studying psychology. She's the go to girl if you need something and the injection of life I needed yesterday. On top of it all her boyfriend Liam will be assisting me with my website design and hosting and gave me a HUG (highly unexpected gift) by allowing me to get up and running while I get business in ***watch this space for my new website*** - thanks for the hug Liam!!! :D

Kyl's this posting is for you! You've been a great friend and a great support and I thank you for always making the time and effort to get together and to encourage and inspire.

I'm interested in YOU!

**Network Group**

I've decided that in the light of getting to know others better I'm going to be starting a networking group inviting professionals and aspiring groups to get together one evening a month to exchange ideas, inspiration and invite others to visit.

If you would like to be on my board to help me with the committee please let me know by adding your comment or mailing me: tanith@starmail.co.za

Any suggestions for:

1. A suitable evening in the week?
2. A venue?
3. Ideas?
4. How much would you be prepared to pay for a monthly/yearly membership?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Determined to succeed? It starts with attitude!

Yesterday I visited Soccer City for my first World Cup Game.
There lined along the sides of the field were about 60 professional photographers, my heart sank at first, as pessimistic thoughts of "if only" crept into my mind.

I've got a couple of friends that don't even muster up the courage to find new positions or send out their cv's but will complain incessantly about how unhappy they are, and make excuses about how they are doomed before they even start looking!

Realising that there are millions of reasons why we could fail there are millions more reasons why we could and CAN succeed - While there are millions of people who consider themselves up and coming photgraphers (or accountants, or designers, or sailors, or anything really) the ones that go that extra mile, the ones with the staying power are those that make it long term and are successful because their attitude at the beginning of their task determined their success (or failure).

Famous quote for the day : Many of us don't plan to fail, but fail to plan! Harvey MacKay
Your attitude at the beginning of your task will determine your success or failure and Tanith Oram is determined to succeed! Whatever it is you're trying to achieve, it all starts with YOU!

Your name goes with you wherever you go!

This weekend I attended the Nikon D5000 full day course that came with my camera purchase.
We all had to introduce ourselves and give some info on our background.

I stood up, stated my name and that some of my friends call me "Wong" because I've been taking photos for so long and always have a camera in my hand. I also stated that I've left my corporate job to pursue my photography career and focus on building my business.

Many people have told me this weekend that going out on my own is a 'brave' thing to do.
I dont know how brave I'm being considering that I'm putting all my faith into the fact that no matter what I sell, at the end of the day I'm the product. My service, my attitude and my professionalism - all ME!

After getting off the phone with a client from a big bank while at work, I took comfort and flattery in her closing comment regarding business I'd done for the company a couple of months ago. She said, "Tanith, you are a good person, and you are a hard worker and I saw that at the event." I realised then that even though I've heard this before and have a dedicated service file for all the compliments I've received while dealing with people, that this time it was the realisation that although this client had a negative experience (due to flooding at the Vaal which affected her event) she was grateful for my attitude and hard work. She has asked me to stay in touch even though I'm leaving the corporate world, your name goes with you wherever you go!

Best the best you can be, you dont know whose watching!

Dont forget those who made you famous

Most people in life depend on nothing less than self determination and drive to get them on the road to success. Fortunately there are those who send kindness our way merely by showing love and support, others send referrals, some may post your link on their site, maybe they just take an extra business card saying "I'll make these work for you".

Without these unselfish people showing random acts of kindness, our roads wouldn't necessarily be smoother, but there wouldn't be any colourful flowers scattered alongside them.

My heartfelt thanks to all my friends, family and loved ones that have never ever stopped believing in me, encouraging my every step even when I've thought, "Huh?? What I just did was so small and lame in comparison to what my version of success is." They were always there.

To Craig of Craig Herzberg Graphic Design & my best friend - thank you for making all my photog stickers & stunning business cards (again) and for never ever doubting me...even when I doubted myself.

To my mom and sister whose many conversations included "Dont give up, try this and keep visualising" thanks for being my earth angels.

To my fans on my Facebook photog site that I haven't met, thanks for spreading the love, without you its just that much harder to hit the thermals and soar.

To Gen of Picture Perfect Cakes for putting me on your networking page on your website - mucho gracias sinorita - mwah! **coffee cake!!**

Love you all - watch me grow - thanks for your kind words and emails of feedback, it all means the world to me and makes me wanna be the best photographer I can be.

Making Friends with Kat

Yesterdays meeting with Kat was awesome, what a wonderfully down to earth and incredibly sweet soul! In our short time chatting together we managed to yak away almost 2 hours of what was meant to be a "quick cuppa" - I love it! Kat is a wedding photographer based in Linden and her work is what I describe as "clean and elegant".

We both shoot off Nikon camera's and reside relatively close to each other so we'll be getting together for some fun engagment / kids and outdoorsy shoots over the next few months as we enrich each others creative skills. ***If you wanna be a model lemme know!***

Thanks Kat for making the time yesterday, I'm very excited to work with you. :)

Networking Rocks!

I've realised that not everyone knows how to network - it is in fact like most things that will get you ahead in life - a skill and not always a God given talent.

In the past couple of months and after listing a couple of attributes I've realised that networking is what I do best - I LOVE putting people in touch with those who can help, aid, benefit from each other.

From July 2010 I'll be starting a networking group which will be held at a venue and I'll be inviting fellow professionals and business owners to join in and share their careers and passions and hopefully my list of contacts will allow for much growth and financial gain in the lives of my friends.

I have also decided that fellow photogs are on my list of people to network with. Why should I shy away from the competition when we could work together? Today I have an appointment with wedding photographer Kat Forsyth, I am over the moon that this amazing artist and business woman hasn't only agreed to see me for coffee but has inspired me through her work and she doesn't even know it yet!

Much love to you all,

See you through the lens !

TOP Takes Off

Funny thing about technology is that we often find out about it waaaaaaaay before we accept it as part of our lives, until of course you've received enough friend requests that you finally give in and join the so called social network - Facebook and then you're hooked. This is my contribution to the world of technology for the sake of my photography career - confirmed and now actioned - in the hopes of getting everyone on the same "page" and familiar with the successes and lessons I face regarding my love of capturing the moment!

Watch this space for news, pics and hopefully some advice / criticisms / feedback from my many wonderful friends and family.
